Fermentation is the process by which sugars are broken down into cellular energy, the products being ethanol and carbon dioxide. When you let bread (with yeast) rise, this is exactly what is happening.
Lichen
Yes, I know that is a tree, not lichen. But if you look to the bottom right hand corner of said tree, you'll see this grayish blue stuff growing on the tree. This is lichen. Put simply, lichens are partnerships between a fungus and an algae which grow symbiotically. Lichens are extremely resilient and can be found in habitats everywhere from deserts to the arctic.
