Hannah 26-30

26) Anther and Filament of the Stamen
A stamen is the male reproductive part of the plant. On the anther, the brownish fuzzy part on a Lily, is where the pollen develops which is the sperm, if you will, of the plant, and each anther is held up by the filament.


27) Gymnosperm Leaf
A gymnosperm is a vascular, seed producing plant, in which the seeds are not contained in an ovary. The developed seed results in a cone.


28) Stigma and Style of a Carpel
The pistil is the female reproductive part of the plant and the stigma is the sticky tip of the pistil. This allows the pollen is easily attach to the stigma to fertilize the plant. The style is the female reproductive part of the plant located in the carpel.


29) Pollinators
A pollinator is the organism responsible from moving the pollen of one plant to the stigma of another plant to cause fertilization/reproduction of plants. I had to be quick, but a fly is an example of a pollinator.


30) An animal that has a segmented body
If an animal has a segmented body is means that its body is made up of more than one part. The largest group of animals with a segmented body is Arthropods. My example is a spider, however it was dark outside so he's a little hard to see, but it's the small, brownish thing to the right of my thumb.

Jamie's Pictures 26-30

Pictures 26-27: Category 8 - Organisms in Different Plant Divisions
Here are representatives of two other plant divisions that I haven't documented yet. The crabapple tree shown represents the Angiosperms, or the flowering plants. These plants were the latest group to develop and are characterized by flowers, seeds with endosperm to nourish the embryo, and fruits (like this crabapple) to surround and protect the seeds. By contrast, the pine tree shown below is a Gymnosperm, or a coniferous plant. These conifers are characterized by seed-bearing cones (the tiny male/spore-containing varieties of which can be seen blurrily on the end of this branch) and 'needle'-like leaves. As can be seen by the success of these two plant divisions worldwide, the development of seeds was a big deal for the gymnosperms on which the angiosperms built.

 Picture 28: Item #12 - Auxin-Producing Area of a Plant
These young raspberries are all developing with the help of a hormone called auxin, which promotes cell growth in its travels throughout the plant (and in this case, the berry). Auxin is produced in the apical bud, which is located at the very end of each stalk (which makes sense, as auxin promotes growth and development in plants, which occurs outward most prominently in areas such as each berry!)

 Picture 29: Item #72 - Parasitism
This vine is an example of a parasite because, in its relationship with the grass around which it has coiled, the vine clearly benefits at its host's expense. The vine takes advantage of the grass' height/position to maximize its own sunlight absorption, and the grass itself absorbs that much less sunlight. The vine doesn't completely kill the grass (and take all its sunlight/nutrients) because then it would be out of a home. Such is the dilemma of a parasite.
Picture 30: Item #2 - Adaptation of a Plant
I took this picture on my first day of summer work, so it seemed fitting to end with it. These thorns are an adaptation that this plant has developed in order to combat any insects or other predators that might try to eat it. Extra-Climactic Ending Sentence.

21. #3 - Altruistic Behavior
I found this bird's nest in one of the water coolers at work. I did not know it was there, and as I took out the cooler from it's holder (the wooden box) a bird flew out and hit my hand. I was surprised, but then I saw the nest inside. The bird that hit my hand was the mother and this is an example of altruistic behavior. The mother bird was sacrificing her life in order for the continuation of her species, through her little bird children making it altruistic. (I couldn't get my finger in this picture because I didn't want to disturb the nest any more than I should)

22. #71 - Niche
Most days, I often see this bird sitting on top of this big shrub. It flutters down and picks at the seeds and small fruits present on the branches and the rest of the time sits on top. This is this bird's niche, or spot in the ecosystem where it flourishes and contributes to the flourishing of the ecosystem around it. This bird has it's unique niche, where it gains nutrition from the shrub, as it eats the small berries, and then transports the shrub's seeds elsewhere when it flies around, benefitting both it and the shrub, and this niche is different from any other organism's.

23. #37 - Exoskeleton
This dragonfly (an arthropod) has a body that is covered by an exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is an outer covering that serves as defined structure and protection to an arthropod. One main molecule that is found in exoskeletons to give it strength is chitin.

24. #84 - Seed dispersal (wind)
This is a seed I found blowing around in the wind. The white on this seed allow it to catch the wind and sail off the plant it came from in order to disperse itself to another location to grow. This is an effective tool for the plant to use, as, it does not need to rely on an animal to come and carry some of it's seeds away, and it does not have to rely on water, if in a case there is a drought.

25. #31 - Endotherm
This chipmunk is an endotherm. In contrast to an ectotherm, an endotherm keeps its body temperature at homeostatic levels internally. They control their body temperature by expending energy to cause heat, such as shivering to keep warm as an example. Mostly mammals and birds are the two most common endothermic divisions.

Sarah B 11-15

Seed Dispersal
This is the seed dispersal method of the Maple Tree, I call them helicopters. When they fall from the tree their shape allows them to spin, hopefully away from the parent tree. They also make a lovely rhinoceros nose.



Animal that has a segmented body
As you can see, this is an earthworm. Like many worms, this little fella is segmented. If you recall back to our lab last year, when you cut them open there are continuous rings along their sides, about a millimeter apart, the entire way down their body.


Hydrophobic
The molecules of this canola oil are non polar. Because water is polar, they do not mix well and it can be said that oil is hydrophobic.

Hydrophilic
Almond extract is a solution with the solvent being alcohol. Alcohol is a polar molecule, making the solution largely polar. This allows it to easily mix with water; it is hydrophilic.

Ethylene
Ethylene is a gas produced by plants which can stimulate growth, petal loss, and ripening of fruit. It is part of the reason that this nectarine ripened when placed in a bowl of fruit.

Mating Behavior (#62)
During the spring and summer months, a male horseshoe crab
 (the smaller of the two) attaches himself to a female who will then 
dig a hold in the sand where she will place her eggs (usually between 
60,000 and 120,000) for the male to fertilize.

Pollinator (#76)
This bee was extrodinarily hard to tke a picture of. He decided that he was only going to
 land on flowers i couldn't see and when he did land on a flower i could see it was for
all of two second. But i guess that goes to show just how many flowers bees pollinate 
in the course of a day and why they are crucial to flower reproduction

Gymnosperm Cone (#46)
This is the male (i think) gymnosperm cone also known as a strobilus 
they are found lower to the ground than their femle counterparts and are usually smaller.
(Fun fact: the spirals of gymnosperm cones, like most things found in nature, follows the 
golden ratio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio)

Frond (#40)
The fern Loki is chilling under is composed of fronds. Fronds are leaves that
are divided into smaller leaves (scientific i know). They are  mostly found on ferns.

Lichen (#58)
Thi picture depicts a smallish patch of lichen attached to the 
side of a tree. Lichen is usually one of the first things
to settle in new place (partiually ones without soil)
because they are very resiliant and can live in extremely 
hot or extremely cold.

Evidence of different alleles for the same trait.
This picture shows three plants of the same kind that are 
all different colors. As far as i could tell there were 5 
or six different shades varying from bright white to deep pinky-red.

This is an amniotic egg (froma chicken). It is easily recognizable because of its
hard out shell.Amniotes are land dwelling vertebrates that had to evolve different
features to allow them to survive on land. An egg with a hard outer shell was one
of these features. Hard shelled eggs are more durrible and thay do not need to be kept
in or near water because the shell keeps in the moister needed.

This (not so)little mushroom can be considered a detritovore because
 it is feeding off the left over tree trunk. Fungi help to
 decompose the dead materials in nature and are one of the 
only organisms in nature that canbreak down chemical compounds
in wood.

This is a picture of  lythrum salicaria, also known as the purple loosestrife.
This plant was introduced into north america and new zeland. This plant
is found mostly in wetland and thanks to the large number of flowers,
can cause a distruption of the flo of water in rivers.

does not rely on other organisms to survive.

This apple is an example of the overy of an angiosperm.Inside can be found the endosperm

 This picture shows examples of five different types of carbohydrates
1. Theyellow squash - a complex fibrous carbohydrate called Oligosaccharides.
2. the pasta and rice both contain Polysaccharides which are long carbohydrate molecules
3. Milk - Milk contains lactose which is a monosaccharides that 
is easily broken down in the body and give milk a sweet taste.
4.The brown sugar is a Disaccharides which is formed when
 two monosaccharides undergo a condensation reaction which 
involves the elimination of a small molecule, such as water

Different classes of proteins
1. The whites in eggs contain globulin and Albumin which are
 both Globular Proteins and commonly found in blood plasma
2. In milk is found casei, which is a type of protein found in
milk 
3.Wheat germ contains lectin, which is a sugar binding protein that 
are also commonly found in viruses.
4.Tuna as well as other meat products contain sarcoplasm which
holds myoglobin, a protein hat bonds to oxygen,
(and we are going to ignore the peanuts in the picture because
 i cannot figure out what type of protein is in peanuts)

Enzyme
Pineapples contain the enzyme Bromelain. This enzyme can be used to help tenderize meat
 and is the reason your tounge may hurt a bit if you consume too much pineapple. 
This enzyme, like most enzymes, loses its effectiveness once it is heated.

Hermaphrodie
This picture of a slug( the cute little brown thing Loki is pointing to)
is an example of a hermaphrodite, which mean that
 they have both male and female reproductive organs.

Vestigle structure.
The weird little thing is the inner corner of each of your eyes is actually a vestigial
structure left over from a third eyelid (like the ones that fish or birds have). Other
 interesting vestigial structure include little muscle on the end of each of our
hair folicles that makes the hairstick up when it is cold or we are frightented
and our wisdom teeth (which some people are actually born without now a day)

This is my doggie cooper. He is a mammal (duh) and thus he is an endotherm. becasueo this he had to regulate his body temperature. If he didn't do this, his body temperature would fall out of the acceptable range and he would most certanly die. Just like humans, dogs have way of keeping themselves at equilibrium. They an pant if thay get to hot, or generate heat by metabolizing things quicker if they get to cold.

This is my other puppy, Ginny. She is an example of bilateral symmetry. If someone were to
(god fobid) cut her in half the long way, they would find that she is almost the same one both
side, which would be cool, but they would also have two halves of a puppy.

Loki has claimed his rightful place on the mycorrhizae throne. This beautiful fungi has formed a symbiotic relationship with the roots of this tree. The fungi helped the tree to absorb nutrience  and water more efficiently than the roots can do by themselves and in return the fungi get a place to stay.

This is a picture of the great bay, a salt water inlet that connects to the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the many biomes that can be found in New Hampshire. With its slightly muddy slightly sand shores, this bay is home to a wide variety of organism that include, but are not limited to:  lobster, great blue herons, horseshoe crabs, oysters, clams, and a wider variety of fish and insects. Just like the ocean, the great bay experiences daily tidal shifts that expose the muddy shores of the bay.

In this picture Loki is sitting on his throne, overlooking his majestic, gymnosperm leave covered kingdom. These particular leaves have fallen from the trees, a yearly occurrence around this time. The once vibrant green sticks turned orange and their mother ship, a pine tree, prepares to duel the harsh new england winters once more.

 Recessive and Dominate phenotype.
For those of you who do not know, this is me (the blonde) and my twin sister Katie.
No we do dye our hair (well katie does, but it is natural still brown).It is clear that 
the brown hair and brown eyes Katie has is the dominate phenotype to my blonde hair blue eyes. Both my parents have brown hair, as well as my older sister Michela.





Sarah B's First 10

 Amniotic Egg
This is a picture of an egg from the amniote, chicken. Amniotic egg's played a key role in the evolution of vertebrates out of the sea. Their complex systems of membranes allowed the embryo to survive outside of water.


Connective Tissue
Yes, this is a picture of my eye. In the eye is the cornea, which has many layers. Bowman's Layer, which protects the stroma, is composed of collagen fibers (a type of connective tissue). These fibers attach to one another to create a tough layer.


Vascular Cambium
This is a stump from an old oak tree. Within the trunk of oak trees there is a vascular cambium which transports water up through the tree. As the trunk continues to expand, these cells will become xylem and phloem.

Pollinator
This Monarch Butterfly has been buzzing around my moms garden all day, flower to flower, looking for some tasty nectar. Inadvertently, this butterfly has gotten pollen all over itself. As the butterfly rubs against the flowers, some of the pollen it is carrying lands on the stamen of the flower. From here it will travel down a pollen tube and into an ovule

Enzyme
What you see in this picture is a piece of meat sitting in a bowl of hydrogen peroxide. There are enzymes in the meat which act as a catalyst in the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
 

C3 Plant
This rose comes from a C3 plant. This means that during the day, the plant opens its stoma to breath in CO2 and breaths out O2.


Bilateral Symmetry
This vine leaf is bilaterally symmetrical. This means that each side a mirror image of the other when divided down the center.

ATP
This is a picture of ham. The ham we eat comes from muscle's within a pig. Muscles contract by shortening individual sarcomere's. This process takes energy, witch comes from ATP (adenosine triphospate). Within the muscle there are molecules of ATP bound between the myosine heads and actin filaments. To release energy, the ATP losses a phosphate group and becomes ADP (adenosine diphosphate) which is then recycled into a new ATP molecule.


Cuticle Layer
This is a Rhododendron leaf. The waxy sheen you see is the cuticle layer. The cuticle helps protect leaves and retains moisture. This layer also keeps the plant's surface from getting wet.


Predation
This is my cat Salem. Even though its not good for the local environment, we do let our cats outside. While wandering around our gardens and trees, Salem occasionally catches a mouse, small bird, or chipmunk. After tormenting the poor thing, he'll drag it off into some corner of our yard to nibble on.
